A Challenging Update To An Older Deck
This project began as an older wood deck that was rather unremarkable. It was stripped down to the frame, reinforced and then re-clad with MoistureShield Elevate Decking.
The Client had a design for a planter box and that was built with Ipe imported hardwood lumber. The sides of the planter are constructed with a rain-screen, an airspace exists between the cladding and the box beneath. This allows the moisture from the planter to escape without effecting the hardwood cladding. It also protects the plantings from heat that would prematurely dry and overheat them. The stairs and fascia are also ipe for rich attractiveness and durability.
The railing is a custom design based on a couple of versions of our railing offerings. In this case we combined the top-rail free materials and a wood top-rail adapter to create a unique design that left a gap that we could fill with LED lights. The glass had a special 3 sided edge grind cut into it so it would refract the LED light. It’s spectacular to behold. A special diffraction lens was used to illuminate the sides of the posts adjacent to the stairs for a very custom and safe touch. We have been playing with LED’s for quite some time now and really have mastered the implementation into deck construction.
